MATCH REPORT – NEFWL KNOCK-OUT FINAL
Crail GS 3 - Charleton GC 1
Following two solid victories in the quarter-final and semi-final stages, Crail’s Handicap Team found themselves in the North East Fife Winter League Knock-out final, up against Charleton GC. The matches, held over Craighead Links on Sunday 6th September, were played on one of the finest days of the year, with not a breath of wind and glorious sunshine; and the course, as always, was in pristine condition.
The task was always going to be tall, going up against the form team in the league; however, home advantage was key for the Crail team, who set out to secure victory in the knock-out tournament.
The opening game went the way of Charleton, with the final match going to Crail. The second and third matches were proving crucial to the outcome of the result, with both matches eventually going down the 18th at All Square. In both cases, it was Crail who emerged victorious at 1up; Danny Slaughter securing the 3-1 victory with a clutch 15-foot putt on the final green in game 3. Cue the celebrations!
Special recognition must go to Stuart Baker, Captain of the Handicap Team Section, for his hard work and guidance throughout the campaign, as must go to the entire Crail Team and all those who have participated in the 2019-20 Winter League. The fight and character shown by all has been outstanding, resulting in such a well-deserved victory. A special thank you must also go to the Catering team for provision of the post-match hospitality, and indeed to Gus Calder of the NEFWL and Elaine Johnson for coordinating the playing of the event, particularly in such challenging circumstances.
We look forward to the 2020-21 Winter League season, and to our defence of the Swilken Trophy.
