The Competition Season is now officially underway, and what a fine way to kick-off the fixture list!
The 2021 playing of the Captain v Vice Captain Match, the traditional season opener, took place on Saturday 1st May over an immaculate Balcomie Links under blue skies and very light winds. 88 players turned out for the event, appropriately dressed in the Captain’s colours (Blue) and Vice Captain’s Colours (Pink), competing in 22 individual four-ball-better-ball matches.
At the end, it couldn’t have been much closer, with the Vice-Captain’s Team edging the contest by a single point from the Captain’s Team, winning by 11.5 points to 10.5, and giving the Captain the ‘honour’ of claiming the Rabbits Trophy (since 1982, the Society’s least desired trophy).
As well as the contest, our Assistant Professional, Craig Jackman, provided an added incentive by challenging all Competitors to a Beat the Pro nearest-the-pin challenge on the 14th hole. Of those who successfully stuck their tee shots inside of Craig’s, a prize draw was conducted to identify the overall winner. We’re delighted to announce that Nicola Gemmel was the lucky champion, and takes home a £40 voucher for the Professional Shop – many congratulations Nicola!
A considerable amount of planning went into the event to ensure everything ran smoothly and safely. A special thanks must go to Malcolm Stewart for acting as Official Starter for the day, Ewan Macdonald for handicap administration and checking players in, David Snodgrass and Ben McKay for collecting scores and processing the results, Craig Jackman for challenging all competitors to Beat the Pro, Elaine Johnson for administration and event communications, and to the Social and Match & Handicap Committees for their work in bringing the event together.
We hope that everyone had as enjoyable a day as we did, and would like to wish all Members the very best for the competitive season at Crail.
Best Wishes and Play Well,
Max and Robert
